Understanding employee values is the key to retention

There was a time when pay rises and promotions were seen as the best ways to stem turnover. But many employers are now looking more imaginatively about how they are going to keep their people. What they have discovered is that so-called soft benefits are not only less expensive but also more effective, according to a study by US human resources magazine Workforce.

A flood of recent studies shows that today's workers are looking for better ways to balance work and leisure, family and community time. Their values are shifting. These trends have intensified the need for employers to think creatively about how they are going to stop their people walking out of the door.

The July edition of Workforce offers a useful six-point plan for finding, keeping, and engaging great staff .
