The low-down on online salary surveys

There's a vast amount of salary information just a few clicks away, but the world wide web can be a chaotic and frustrating experience for all too many compensation experts. The latest edition of the US human resources magazine Workforce includes a series of case studies illustrating how companies — both large and small — are using the internet to find salary information, which sometimes is accurate — and sometimes not.

Everyone from established survey providers and consultants, to job sites and professional associations are coming online with compensation data. And because of the speed and cost-savings of the internet, there's likely to be a surge in the number of companies offering web delivery.

The January issue of Workforce looks at how three companies capitalise on the web in salary benchmarking. As the author remarks: Each has its own approach to using the internet, yet all recognise the time savings, efficiencies, and even drawbacks of the process.
