Performance management challenges

Performance management is still a huge stumbling block for many organisations and can be a ‘living nightmare’ for employees, according to Bryson Kearl writing on the Bamboo HR blog. The main challenges are the fact that old habits die hard, with many employers hanging on to traditional annual review processes, and the fact that too many performance reviews focus on making some people happy at the expense of others.

In addition, although new technology is reinventing the process for many it is not the be-all-and-end-all; in some cases technology becomes something for managers to hide behind so that they do not have to engage in meaningful interaction with team members.

The solutions to these problems include:

  • increasing the frequency of performance dialogue
  • moving to 360-degree assessments
  • automating the process
  • using technology to engage in better follow-up
  • focusing on encouraging managers to form real relationships within their teams.
