Pay and reward practices in the new economy surveyed

Industrial Relations Services has published its third annual analysis of trends in reward of those who work behind the scenes in setting up and running web sites and e-commerce enterprises.

What you will find in this report

This six-page review draws on an analysis of advertised salary information from the recruitment web site Jobserve.com together with surveys published by:

  • Hay Group
  • Mercer Human Resource Consulting
  • National Computing Centre
  • Robert Walters
  • Salary Survey Publications/Computer Weekly
  • The Reward Group.

IRS also contacted ten e-commerce divisions of established businesses and standalone internet organisations and questioned them on their reward practices.

  • Pay rates: Salary data is provided for each of the principal technical employee groups - webmaster, web developer, web designer, web author/editor and web security specialist.
  • Salary awards: Drawing on information published by a range of salary survey specialists, IRS found that the days of generous annual pay rises are long gone, with several surveys recording little or no movement.
  • Incentives: "Short-term incentives are not popular among e-commerce organisations, and share option remain the favoured long-term incentive," concludes IRS.
  • Benefits packages: Among the small sample of 10 companies contacted by IRS, fixed benefit packages with a limited range of benefits are typical in standalone e-commerce organisations.
