New top pay league launched

The Financial Times web site has launched a listing of executive directors' pay in FTSE 100 companies. The league table is compiled from information gathered by Monk Partnership, a pay consultancy.

According to the latest figures, which cover 1999, 71 directors had pay packages topping £ 1m. Jim McKenna of Logica, the software and computer services company, was the highest paid personnel director in the UK.

What you'll find in the FTCareerPoint Pay League

The listing offers boardroom pay information covering:

  • Base: base salary.

  • Bonus: annual cash bonus in the year to which the bonus relates. Where no bonus was paid, or no plan exists, then a zero is entered. With the increase in deferred annual bonus plans, Monks have adopted the following principle to define annual payment. Where possible, any element of the bonus that is deferred for a period of time is included in the annual bonus payment. However, if an additional award is paid at the end of the deferred period, either in cash or, commonly, in matching shares, this has not been included in the annual bonus award.

  • Other earnings: includes gains from long-term incentive plans such as share options.

  • Total earnings: base salary plus annual bonus (for example, cash bonus), other taxable benefits (such as company car and health insurance) plus gains from long-term incentive plans such as share options.
