PAY DISCRIMINATION

New research on gender pay gap

New research on the gender pay gap carried out for the Equal Opportunities Commission has revealed the long-term "scarring" effect that taking time out of the workplace to look after children or other relatives can have on women's earnings.

Each year that a woman takes out cuts 1% off her earnings for the rest of her life. The EOC research, which was undertaken by Wendy Olsen of the University of Manchester and Sylvia Walby of the University of Leeds, also found that working part-time actually decreases a woman's earning power year-on-year, in contrast to the increase experienced by full-time workers.
