REWARD MANAGEMENT

Little change in the management and communication of reward programmes

Why are changes to reward not always a resounding success? Because little progress has been made in ensuring the effectiveness of implementation, communication and management of these reward programmes, according to new research by Towers Perrin.

The successful investment in new reward practices involves a great deal of effort, commitment and expertise. And it is probably the most difficult task facing HR managers. But much of the Towers Perrin research brings a sobering sense of plus ca change when it comes to the process of pay change management and communication. Indeed, according to the survey participants, one of biggest challenges still facing their organisations is in the implementation and management of reward changes.

"Communicating about rewards and performance remains difficult -- partly due to the number and complexity of the programmes, partly because it can be difficult to engage the whole organisation in the process," says Towers Perrin. The survey found that two-fifths of non-management employees are thought to have only a "low level of understanding" of how their performance affects business results.
