Bonuses boost HR salary growth

HR professionals saw their basic pay rise by 2.6% at the median over the past 12 months, according to data published by XpertHR Salary Surveys. The survey also reveals a recovery in bonus payments, with salary figures including both basic pay and bonuses rising by 3.6% in the year to 1 September 2010. By comparison, in the 12 months to September 2009, basic pay rose by 3.8% and basic pay plus bonuses by just 0.8%.

The median salary for an HR director now stands at just under £130,000 a year, excluding bonuses and other payments.

XpertHR says: “In summary, the findings show that salaries have begun to grow again following the recession as bonuses have returned, but that pay growth remains muted - and has actually fallen behind inflation. This means many HR professionals will find themselves worse off in real terms despite having had a pay rise.”

It adds: “Over the coming year, continued slow pay growth will do little more than cushion the impact of rising prices and higher taxes - and in some parts of the economy, most notably in the public and voluntary sectors, even this cushion will be removed as pay freezes continue for many.”
