Becoming an employer of choice when the going gets tough

How are you supposed to become an "employer of choice" when the hard times hit and the cash is in short supply? A recent issue of People Management magazine reckons that companies are looking at ever more imaginative ways to communicate what it is about working for them that is so special and different.

This three-page article by David Shonfield, an independent researcher and consultant, examines the approach adopted by organisations such as Asda and AstraZeneca as they aspire to become an "employer of choice".

A final word

"Flexibility over benefits, whether limited (such as the ability to trade some holiday entitlement for pay) or the full 'flex' approach, now also seems to be a requirement for the employer of choice." - David Shonfield, People Management, 23 January 2003.
