REWARD MANAGEMENT

A new role for reward professionals

Reward professionals have a crucial role to play as the "guardians of motivation" beyond determining and executing pay strategy, says Lynda Gratton, associate professor at London Business School.

Writing in a recent issue of People Management magazine, Gratton believes that the natural role of reward is to motivate people. "That means with regard to monetary rewards, its emphasis must be on the creation of processes which are involving, participatory, just and fair."

But she also identifies a new role for reward specialists, if we change the focus from monetary to non-monetary. "Most crucially, this is to ensure that the internal labour market enables people to grow through access to challenging and exciting jobs and access to become project team members."
