Training and development rated more important than pay

Personal development, training and a healthy work-life balance are the key considerations in accepting a new job rather than the basic salary package, according to a survey by recruitment consultancy Robert Walters.

The web site poll, which covered over 8,000 people globally, asked respondents "What's the most important consideration for you in deciding to accept a new job?". The key results are as follows

  • opportunities for ongoing training and personal -- voted by 34% of respondents
  • work-life balance -- 32%
  • basic salary -- 26%
  • quality of the benefits package -- 8%.

Only within the UK and Singapore did basic salary score higher than either ongoing training and personal development and work-life balance.

Susan Major, director of Robert Walters human resources recruitment division in the UK, said: "The results of the survey clearly indicate a shift in peoples' mindsets away from a bias towards finances, towards personal fulfilment and lifestyle choice."

"In the UK, although basic salary does still rank as the number one consideration, more and more candidates are stating work-life balance and personal development as key to a career decision. The gap is definitely closing".
